Providing Meals at the Homeless Shelter

Information for Meal Providers at the LUM Homeless Shelter

Thank you for your interest in providing meals at the LUM Homeless Shelter.

LUM's shelter guests are provided an evening bowl of soup, stew, or chili after they are admitted to the shelter beginning at 9pm. We make a conscious effort to make sure the food we serve is nutritious but basic. We're grateful for your generosity and ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Prepare enough soup, stew, or chili for 50 people.
  • No side dishes or desserts are needed.
  • Drinks are provided by LUM.
  • Bowls and spoons are provided by LUM.

You can help in several ways:

  • Schedule a date with Shelter Director Joyce Boehm (423-2691 or jboehm@lafayetteurbanministry.org) to bring a simple meal. Prepare the soup, stew or chili at your leisure and bring it to the shelter on your scheduled date between 8:30am-4:30pm (M-F) or in the evening between 8:00-8:30pm. It's important that your soup, stew, or chili arrive NO LATER than 8:30pm.
  • Make a monthly commitment if possible. Bring a simple meal on the same night each month.
  • Groups interested in serving their simple meal should arrive at 8:30pm and plan to stay until 10:30pm. Please let Joyce know in advance if you will be staying to serve.
  • Remember to label your cookware. Please return to pick it up as soon as possible—we'd hate for it to get lost. You may transfer your soup, stew, or chili to LUM's pots if you wish.

Be aware of food safety:

  • Keep your food preparation area clean.
  • Use clean utensils.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Cook all meat thoroughly to 165 degrees.

Make sure your soup, stew, or chili has been heated to 165 degrees, or if bringing it during the day, have it cooled to 40 degrees.

Please be sure to let the Shelter Director know if you want to be scheduled to cook, serve or both.

THANK YOU!
